China has achieved significant milestones in the domestic design and construction of large-scale industrial gas carriers. In August 2026, the Jiangnan Shipyard delivered a 230-meter ethane-ethylene carrier with a 99,000 cubic meter capacity. This vessel, designed for long-range transport with low fuel consumption, utilizes ethane-powered generators and engines to reduce sulfur emissions by up to 99% and hydrocarbon emissions by 18%. Following this, in September 2026, China completed the Chang Ping Yuan, its first large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier featuring entirely domestic design and construction. The 88,000 cubic meter vessel utilizes advanced low-temperature welding technology and a dual-fuel engine. It is capable of transporting nine types of liquefied gases, including ammonia, and is noted as the largest vessel of its class able to navigate both old and modern locks of the Panama Canal. The ship aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and sulfur oxides and particulate matter by 90%. This completion represents a significant technological milestone, utilizing indigenous processes to reduce technological dependence in the strategic energy transport sector. Furthering this momentum, COSCO SHIPPING (Qidong) Offshore delivered the Chang Ping Yuan, which is identified as China’s first domestically designed and built 88,000-cbm Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) under the Chinese flag. The vessel features LPG dual-fuel propulsion and incorporates intelligent systems and energy-saving technologies, such as energy-saving ducts and a rudder bulb, to facilitate future low-carbon fuel transport.
