China economic and insurance sector pressures

Overview

China is experiencing economic pressure driven by a persistent slump in the property market and slowing growth within its insurance sector. While national home prices saw a slight year-on-year improvement in August, declines continue in major markets such as Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.

In response to the real estate downturn and weak consumer demand, the Chinese non-life insurance sector is pivoting from expansion toward profitability. This shift includes scaling back physical branch networks in favor of digital operations to reduce costs. Despite these challenges, China’s share of global insurance premiums reached 10.9% in 2025, supported by tighter regulation and demand from Chinese companies expanding internationally.

Recent August economic data reveals a widening divergence between industrial output and domestic demand. Industrial production accelerated to 5.2% year-on-year, exceeding forecasts and driven by advanced manufacturing sectors like lithium-ion batteries and industrial robots. However, domestic consumption and investment remain weak; retail sales grew by only 0.4% and fixed-asset investment fell 7.2% for the first eight months of the year.

The property sector continues to act as a significant drag, with real estate development investment dropping 19.9% and national home prices falling 3.0% year-on-year in August. The National Bureau of Statistics noted an imbalance between strong supply and weak demand, while urban unemployment rose slightly to 5.3%. These indicators have increased pressure on policymakers to implement further stimulus to meet annual growth targets.
