China economic debt and wealth outflow

Overview

China is experiencing significant economic strain driven by high debt levels and shifting financial dynamics. Research indicates that the nation’s current debt-to-GDP ratio, which is second only to Japan among major economies, is linked to historical financial repression. To address banking insolvency in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the state effectively shifted the burden of non-performing loans to the household sector by maintaining bank deposit rates below inflation and GDP growth.

This debt crisis has been compounded by rising government debt, which was estimated to reach 102.5 trillion yuan by the end of 2025. Additional pressures include high unemployment resulting from increased investment in advanced manufacturing and intensified tax enforcement across various sectors, including the digital economy. These combined economic factors have contributed to a notable outflow of wealth and people, with an estimated 152,000 wealthy individuals and professionals emigrating from China in 2024.
