China food safety and regulatory oversight concerns
Overview
China is facing scrutiny over food safety oversight following reports of improper processing and contamination in Guangdong and Shanghai.
In Guangdong, authorities investigated reports of bamboo shoot processors using sulfur fumigation to whiten products and extend shelf life. Testing revealed sulfur dioxide levels of 4860 mg/kg, which significantly exceeds safe limits. In response, South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced enhanced sulfur dioxide testing for all imported Chinese processed bamboo shoot foods to prevent contamination.
Concurrently, a batch of black sesame paste produced by a subsidiary of the state-controlled Weiwei Co. in Shanghai was found to contain mold levels as high as 2,800 colony-forming units per gram, which is 28 times the maximum permitted limit. These incidents have led to criticism regarding structural gaps in the national food safety system and weaknesses in corporate quality-control measures.
