China-Pakistan economic and security challenges in Gwadar

Gwadar Port, a central hub of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is navigating a complex landscape of increasing commercial activity and persistent strategic risks. While recent records show rising cargo volumes, including significant shipments of steel, machinery, and fertilizer, the port has yet to achieve its goal of becoming a mature regional trade hub.

Security remains a primary concern in Balochistan, where insurgent groups like the Baloch Liberation Army have targeted Chinese personnel and infrastructure through suicide bombings and ambushes. These security threats, combined with Pakistan’s economic crisis and the logistical difficulties of transporting goods through extreme mountainous terrain, threaten the long-term viability of the corridor.

While organizations like the UNDP and CICETE continue to cooperate on livelihood recovery and agricultural restoration projects in the region, reports suggest that high operational costs and ongoing instability may eventually force a Chinese retreat from the port, complicating Beijing’s objective to secure a maritime shortcut to the Arabian Sea.
