China Qianfan Constellation satellite expansion

Overview

China is rapidly expanding its Qianfan Constellation, a satellite internet network, through a series of successful launches in mid-September 2026.

On September 15, the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center utilized an OrienSpace Gravity-1 Y3 rocket to launch nine satellites from a maritime platform near Shanghai. This mission included satellites for the Qianfan Constellation and an Enhanced Ultra High Throughput (EUHT) satellite for testing data transmission. The launch demonstrated the efficiency of maritime models for medium to large payloads.

Following this, on September 17, a Long March 12 rocket launched from Hainan, deploying 25 low Earth orbit satellites. This mission, the eighth for the Long March 12, brought the total number of satellites in the Qianfan Constellation to 256. The project, operated by Guanshi Satellite, aims to deploy 324 satellites by the end of 2026, with a long-term goal of exceeding 15,000 satellites to provide integrated global services.
