The crackdown on religious groups in China intensified through mid-2026, characterized by systematic repression of Falun Gong practitioners and Christian congregations. In the Zion Church case, following the October 2025 raids, nine members were released in June 2026, but church leaders remain in custody facing escalated charges of fraud and illegal business operations. In July 2026, at least 490 practitioners were reported to have suffered persecution, including 58 illegal sentences, 204 abductions, and 223 cases of harassment. Notable incidents include the death of 65-year-old Yang Jinhui in a Yunnan detention center and the imprisonment of practitioners in Gansu. Recent reports highlight increasing pressure on elderly practitioners. In Guangdong, 64-year-old Chen Xueqing was formally arrested in August 2026. In Shanxi, 71-year-old Gao Jiping is reportedly in critical condition with end-stage uremia after being sent to prison despite being medically unfit. Legal scholar Yuan Hongbing characterized these actions as a manifestation of “extreme state violence and totalitarianism.” Newer reports detail severe physical and psychological abuse within the prison system. In Chengdu, Luo Yi reportedly faced systematic torture at Longquan Women's Prison, including forced rigid postures and food poisoning suspicions.
