China-Taiwan maritime tension escalation
Overview
Tensions between Taiwan and China have escalated through increased maritime presence and what Taiwanese authorities describe as “gray zone” tactics.
In August, Taiwan’s coast guard intercepted the Chinese research vessel Tongji near the Penghu islands. This marked the third time the vessel had appeared in the area since May, raising concerns that the ship was conducting unauthorized surveys to gather strategic data near military facilities.
By September, the scope of maritime pressure expanded. The Taiwan Coast Guard Administration reported multiple incursions by Chinese vessels near the Kinmen archipelago, characterizing the maneuvers as a “planned harassment operation.” This activity follows a sustained increase in Chinese maritime presence in the Pacific waters east of Taiwan, extending Beijing’s operational reach beyond the traditional Taiwan Strait.
