China trade growth and international scrutiny
Overview
China is experiencing significant growth in foreign trade, characterized by a surge in imports and a diversifying export mix. High-tech sectors are driving this expansion, with integrated circuit exports rising 198.1%, lithium batteries up 243.1%, and new energy vehicle exports increasing by 97.6% during the first three quarters of 2026. To facilitate market access, China has implemented initiatives such as the ‘Share the Great Market, Export to China’ program and applied zero-percent tariffs on specific products from 53 African nations.
This trade expansion has drawn international scrutiny regarding China’s growing trade surplus, which reached $1.2 trillion in 2025 and remained on track to surpass that figure in 2026. While the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has stated it has “no need or intent” to weaken its currency for trade advantages, attributing growth to industrial competitiveness rather than exchange rate manipulation, critics in the United Kingdom and the United States argue a weak renminbi contributes to the export boom. Consequently, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has maintained China on its monitoring list, and nations such as the United States and members of Europe have implemented tariffs or expressed concerns regarding the erosion of their industrial bases.
