China used car market structural challenges

Overview

China’s used car market reached a milestone in the first half of 2026, with transaction volumes of 971.32 million units creating a 1:1 ratio between new and used vehicle transactions.

Despite this volume growth, the industry is experiencing severe structural instability. Approximately 30,000 physical dealerships have closed so far this year, averaging 166 closures per day. Over 70% of remaining dealers report losses, with profit margins compressed to roughly 4% due to aggressive price wars in the new car market.

Industry leader Autohome also reported a significant downturn, with revenue falling 30% year-on-year and net profit dropping 62.2%. This decline is linked to a weakening dealer ecosystem and shifting consumer behavior toward live-streaming and short-video platforms.
