Chinese automotive companies Xiaomi and XPeng continue to prioritize the integration of artificial intelligence and robotics. Xiaomi Chairman Lei Jun has emphasized quality management through real-world testing using nearly 3,000 vehicles, noting that while AI marks a new era, lifecycle testing remains vital. Xiaomi has invested 105 billion yuan in R&D over the last five years and aims to exceed 200 billion yuan in the next five. XPeng is focusing on robotics and high-margin technology services, with CEO He Xiaopeng noting that robot development is “approximately 20 times more difficult than manufacturing automobiles.” To diversify revenue, XPeng is transitioning into a technology provider, licensing software, AI chips, and electronic architectures to international automakers. While vehicle sales margins face pressure, revenues from services reportedly jumped 93.9% year-on-year. Volkswagen’s efforts in China show mixed results. While the XPeng-collaborated ID. UNYX 08 struggled with low sales, Volkswagen is seeing success through its FAW-Volkswagen joint venture. The Jetta sub-brand’s M6 electric sedan secured over 10,000 binding orders within 19 hours of its release, positioned as an affordable option starting at approximately 79,800 yuan. To address software development challenges and losses at its subsidiary, Cariad, Volkswagen is evaluating a strategic shift to implement the China Electronic Architecture (CEA), developed in partnership with XPeng, across its European electric vehicle lineup. CEO Thomas Schäfer is expected to present this proposal, which could cover approximately 75% of next-generation models for Volkswagen, Škoda, and Cupra. Adopting the CEA framework could reduce development costs by an estimated €4 billion to €5 billion, driven in part by lower engineering labor rates in China—approximately €60 per hour compared to €120 in Germany and €174 in the Rivian joint venture. China. This move could significantly impact Volkswagen’s $5.8 billion software partnership with the American company Rivian. Furthering the partnership, Volkswagen Anhui has launched the ID. Unyx 09 in China.
