Chinese influence in US education

Overview

Reports from the organization Defending Education and the House Select Committee on China have raised concerns regarding Chinese Communist Party (CCP) influence within the United States education system.

An investigation by Defending Education identified the Young Envoys Scholarship (YES) program, overseen by the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), in 83 universities and 26 K-12 schools across 30 states. The report, titled ‘Little Red Classrooms: China’s Infiltration of American K-12 Schools,’ alleges the CEAIE acts as a vehicle for propaganda, noting the organization’s charter requires adherence to the leadership of the Party and ‘Marxism-Leninism.’ Reagan Dugan, director of higher education initiatives at Defending Education, described the program as a ‘Party-run pipeline’ into American classrooms.

Further scrutiny has focused on foreign funding, including a report that the University of Illinois System received $26.5 million of $168 million in Chinese donations over a six-month period in 2021. While many Confucius Institutes have been disbanded, critics suggest new initiatives, such as those aligned with Beijing’s ‘Community of Common Destiny’ initiative, continue to promote Chinese values within American institutions.
