Chinook salmon protection and conservation funding in BC

Overview

In British Columbia, the provincial government has reinstated a temporary fish protection order for the Salmon River watershed to safeguard endangered Chinook salmon. The decision follows reports of critically low streamflows driven by drought conditions. While more than 200 adult Chinook have entered the watershed to spawn, water levels began declining after a previous protection order was rescinded on August 8. Under the current mandate, 458 licence holders are prohibited from using water for irrigation, industrial purposes, and forage crops until environmental flows improve.

To support long-term recovery, the Canadian federal and B.C. governments have launched a $106.5 million investment over five years via the British Columbia Fisheries Fund. This initiative builds on the 2019 Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund and aims to support harvesters and scientists in adapting to changing water conditions while promoting market diversification to increase industry resilience against international trade threats.

Further conservation efforts include over $50 million in federal contracts to construct three salmon hatcheries near traditional First Nations territories, including sites in the Upper Fraser River, the central Interior, the Skeena River system, and near Hanceville. These facilities are intended to raise more than one million juvenile Chinook and sockeye salmon annually. Additionally, a new multi-year genomics collaboration has been established to provide First Nations with genetic analysis tools and infrastructure. Funded by the First Nations Fisheries Council’s Indigenous Stewardship Fund, the Pacific Salmon Foundation, and Genome British Columbia, the project seeks to decentralize genetic stock identification and enhance Indigenous sovereignty in fisheries management.
