Chiricahua National Park designation

Overview

Legislation to establish Chiricahua National Park in southeastern Arizona moved toward final approval following bipartisan support in Congress. The proposed 19-square-mile site, historically significant to the Chiricahua Apache tribes, was previously designated as a national monument to protect its volcanic rock spires.

On October 20, 2026, the site officially became the 64th national park in the United States after President Trump signed the bill into law. This redesignation marks the first new national park designation in the U.S. in six years and makes Chiricahua the fourth national park in Arizona.

The 12,025-acre park is characterized by rhyolite rock spires and balanced rocks formed by volcanic activity approximately 27 million years ago. The area encompasses desert, grassland, and forest ecosystems within the Chiricahua Mountains. The designation also preserves the cultural heritage of the Chiricahua Apache, who consider the area their homeland; legislation includes provisions to preserve tribal access for traditional ceremonies.

Economists suggest the new status may provide a significant boost to the local economy in Cochise County by increasing tourism. The transition follows years of legislative efforts by the Arizona congressional delegation to secure full national park status for the site, which has been federally protected since 1924.
