Cholera outbreak in Nigeria

Overview

Nigeria has recorded over 65,000 suspected cholera cases across 35 states and approximately 195 local government areas. While weekly case numbers and fatality rates have declined significantly from the season’s peak, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) maintains that “the outbreak has not ended.”

Health officials attribute lower mortality rates to improved early access to treatment, particularly in Borno State, which has seen the majority of cases. However, risks remain due to the rainy season and potential flooding, which can contaminate water sources and overwhelm sanitation systems. Underlying issues contributing to the spread include unsafe water, open defecation, and inadequate hygiene infrastructure.

In response to the crisis, which led to a national emergency declaration on June 26, 2024, authorities have strengthened surveillance and laboratory capacities. Mitigation efforts include administering oral cholera vaccines in high-risk areas, chlorinating water sources, and conducting hygiene awareness campaigns.
