Yangon, Myanmar, is experiencing a cholera outbreak following a surge in acute diarrhea cases linked to monsoon flooding and contaminated water. Initial reports indicated that 182 patients were admitted to Yangon General Hospital over a four-day period, with 93 testing positive for pathogens. While state media did not explicitly confirm cholera, local officials reported that the positive cases were indeed cholera. By mid-August, authorities confirmed the outbreak, noting that approximately 500 people had been hospitalized in the city, with between 149 and 180 patients testing positive for the disease. Cases have been concentrated in downtown areas, specifically Chinatown. Potential sources of infection include contaminated water and takeaway street food. As of August 17, regional authorities reported that rapid tests identified 149 positive cases, while the National Health Laboratory subsequently confirmed nine cases as ‘Vibrio cholerae’. While one 92-year-old man died after admission, authorities stated his death was due to pre-existing heart and lung conditions.
