Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal stampede
Overview
A fatal stampede occurred at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata, resulting in 19 deaths.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari attributed the chaos to the failure of temporary Home Guards, alleging that personnel abandoned their crowd control posts during rainfall. In response, the Chief Minister requested a full list of these guards for investigation and directed that VIP passes be replaced by a single-line entry system at major pandals to improve management.
Following the incident, the government provided financial assistance to victims' families, including a Rs 25 lakh cheque to the family of Bikas Bhattacharya. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by retired Justice Anindita Roy Saraswati, has been established to investigate the tragedy and recommend safety improvements. The situation has also generated political friction, with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demanding an impartial probe and stronger public safety measures.
