Maria Avila, a former housekeeper for singer Chris Brown, has officially accepted a reduced $9.5 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit stemming from a 2020 dog attack at Brown’s Tarzana, California, residence. The settlement follows a June jury verdict that originally awarded Avila $12.9 million. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Huey P. Cotton subsequently ruled the initial amount was “excessive,” citing “insufficient evidence of permanent nerve damage and of the value assigned to future pain and suffering.” To avoid a new trial focused solely on damages, Avila’s attorney, Nancy Doumanian, filed a notice stating that Avila “unequivocally accepts the remittitur and consents to the reduction of her damages award.” The $9.5 million settlement is structured to include $3.85 million for past non-economic losses, $5.4 million for future non-economic losses, and $250,000 for future medical expenses. Additionally, the judge upheld an $885,000 award for Avila’s sister, Patricia, who witnessed the attack and was awarded damages for emotional distress and economic loss. The incident occurred on December 12, 2020, when a 200-pound Caucasian Shepherd named Hades attacked Avila while she was working. Avila testified that the mauling resulted in significant facial and arm injuries, permanent scarring, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Following the settlement, the legal dispute has shifted toward the collection of the judgment. Avila has requested that a court issue an arrest warrant for Brown, alleging he has obstructed efforts to collect the funds. She claims Brown had previously sought has failed to provide specific dates for a new trial on various grounds, including juror bias, but those motions were rejected. court appearance intended to examine his finances and alleges that his financial disclosures regarding his ongoing tour income are “incomplete and inaccurate.”
