In early July 2026, a U.S. jury held singer Chris Brown and his security firm liable for a 2020 dog attack on former housekeeper Maria Avila, awarding her $12.9 million in damages. The civil verdict concluded a five-year lawsuit that characterized the dog as a security animal but found Brown negligent. Brown’s legal team has further expanded its arguments for a retrial, contending that the jury was unfairly prejudiced by testimony regarding his past. Specifically, attorneys argue that references to his 2009 felony assault conviction were irrelevant to the dog bite lawsuit. They claim that despite requests to ban such mentions, the singer was asked about prior convictions during cross-examination.
