Christian observance of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is observed by various Christian traditions on September 14.

Orthodox Christians commemorate the holiday by marking the historical discovery of the cross in Jerusalem, a tradition linked to Emperor Constantine the Great and Saint Helena. Observances include prayer, fasting, and the blessing of aromatic plants such as basil, which are then kept in homes for household use. The date also holds folk significance as a marker for the transition from summer to colder seasons.

As the 2026 observance approaches, specific regional traditions remain prominent. In Romania, communities continue the practice of bringing basil, flowers, and aromatic plants to church for blessing, often associating the date with the gathering of medicinal herbs. This year, the day is marked by strict fasting, referred to as ‘post aspru’ or ‘post negru,’ involving abstinence from meat, dairy, eggs, fish, wine, and oil. Specific liturgical programs are scheduled at sites such as the Orthodox Cathedral in Alba Iulia and the Calvaria Chapel in Baia Sprie.

In Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Patriarchate is marking the 1700th anniversary of the finding of the Holy Cross with festivities and a procession in Sofia. Led by Patriarch Daniel, the procession included a piece of the Holy Wood for veneration. In Greece, religious messaging continues to focus on the Cross as a symbol of “strength, love, and hope.”
