Overview

In August 1492 the Genoese explorer Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain with three ships. After three months at sea his fleet sighted land, landing on an island later called San Salvador and then reaching Cuba. This first voyage marked the initial European encounter with the Caribbean islands of the New World.

Six years later, on 31 July 1498 during his third Atlantic expedition, Columbus arrived at the island of Trinidad, naming it “La Trinidad.” Shortly thereafter his fleet entered Paria Bay and sighted the mainland of present‑day Venezuela near the Orinoco River delta, constituting the first recorded European contact with South America.
