Chronic kidney disease research in Brazil

Recent research in Brazil has highlighted various factors and challenges regarding chronic kidney disease (CKD).

A study by the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PUCPR) warned of significant underdiagnosis of the condition. While the Brazilian Society of Nephrology estimates CKD affects approximately 10% of the population, researchers suggest the actual number may be higher due to inadequate early detection. The study noted that the combination of blood creatinine and urine albuminuria tests is rarely used together in clinical practice, with complete screening rates remaining below 7%.

Subsequent research from the Unesp Botucatu Medical School identified a potential link between oral health and CKD risk. The study found that individuals with poor oral health or tooth loss faced a higher likelihood of developing the disease, whereas frequent dental hygiene, such as brushing three times a day, appeared to be a protective factor. While these associations are strong, researchers noted that further studies are necessary to confirm a direct cause-and-effect relationship.
