Cigarette smuggling in the Baltic region

Overview

Authorities in the Baltic region have intercepted significant shipments of contraband cigarettes. In Lithuania, border guards and police seized 55,490 packs of illegal tobacco delivered from Belarus via hot air balloons. These shipments, which utilized GPS trackers for monitoring, were distributed across several municipalities including Varėna, Kaišiadorys, Ukmergė, and Panevėžys.

In Latvia, customs officials at the Grebnevo checkpoint on the Russian border discovered 42,640 packs of cigarettes hidden within a cargo of fresh carrots. The contraband, which featured Belarusian excise tax stamps, was concealed in double compartments built into the bottom of cardboard boxes. This seizure, with an estimated unpaid tax value of approximately 250,000 euros, has led to a criminal investigation and the detention of one individual.
