Smugglers have utilized weather balloons to transport large quantities of contraband over the Podlaskie region in Poland. Initial reports detailed incidents in Jaświły, where a balloon landed on a building roof containing 15,000 packs of unstamped cigarettes, and in Jabłonka Kościelna, where balloon components were discovered in a field. Following these discoveries, the Podlaskie Border Guard detained nine individuals—comprising Polish, Belarusian, and Lithuanian citizens—suspected of smuggling cigarettes from Belarus. The seized goods included over 3,900 cartons valued at more than 621,000 PLN. Authorities noted that this method allows smugglers to bypass traditional checkpoints by utilizing airspace. Since the start of 2026, the Podlaskie Border Guard has detained 40 people in connection with similar balloon-based operations. Recent developments indicate a large-scale investigation overseen by the Białystok District Prosecutor's Office, which has brought charges against more than 150 people. Authorities have detained four individuals suspected of participating in an organized crime group. Among those detained, a Belarusian national suspected of organizing shipments was arrested at a Warsaw airport, and a Polish national was apprehended at the Kuźnica border crossing; both are under temporary arrest. Two other Polish suspects were detained in Białystok and released under police supervision and travel bans. Under the sanctions law, which aims to prevent support for aggression against Ukraine, smuggling cigarettes from Belarus is treated as a crime punishable by 3 to 30 years in prison. In the Kuźnica area alone, 35 people have faced charges this year, with the estimated value of seized cigarettes exceeding 3.7 million PLN.
