The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is expanding its international racing profile through new agreements and contingency planning. The venue has secured a multi-year deal to host the IndyCar Series beginning in July 2027, marking the series’ first race outside North America since 2013 and its first return to Europe since 2007. IndyCar has officially confirmed the July 16–18, 2027, race date as part of a strategic international expansion. The inaugural Grand Prix of Barcelona will replace a July date at the Nashville Superspeedway on a 17-race schedule. Mark Miles, President and CEO of Penske Entertainment Corp., described the announcement as a “monumental day” for the sport, intended to showcase competitive racing to a European audience. While Miles noted that the series does not aim to replicate the global model of Formula 1, it seeks to maintain its unique identity while selectively expanding beyond North America. All 2027 season races are slated to be broadcast on FOX in the United States. The event serves as a significant homecoming for five-time series champion Álex Palou, a native of the Barcelona region. Palou played a key role in facilitating the agreement, acting as a liaison to promote the circuit's facilities and history to American organizers. While initial reports suggested the deal could extend through 2031, subsequent details indicate the agreement is set to span a decade. ten seasons. The announcement was made during a ceremony attended by Palou and officials including Salvador Illa, President of the Government of Catalonia. For the circuit, the addition of IndyCar serves as a strategic move to diversify its international racing calendar during periods when it is not hosting Formula 1. Specifically, the 2027 IndyCar race is timed to coincide with the circuit's rotation with Spa-Francorchamps, as Barcelona will not host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2027. Additionally, the circuit is positioning itself as a high-level backup venue for Formula 1 and MotoGP.
