A Davidson County jury in North Carolina has ordered former NASCAR driver Jennifer Jo Cobb to pay $850,002 to Tracey Hughes in a civil lawsuit. The verdict verdict, reached in Davidson County Superior Court on September 24, follows a three-day trial regarding allegations that Cobb engaged in an affair with Hughes’ husband, Clayton Hughes, a NASCAR spotter, which led to the breakdown of their 17-year marriage in early 2021. The damages were awarded under North Carolina’s “homewrecker laws,” “heart balm” or “homewrecker” laws, specifically $800,000 for criminal conversation and $50,000 for alienation of affection. Although the jury found Cobb liable for punitive damages on both counts, they awarded only $1 for each. The lawsuit, which was filed in January 2024, alleged that the relationship between Cobb and Clayton Hughes involved secret encounters and sexually provocative communications during racing competitions. During the trial, testimony from a private investigator described overhearing intimate encounters at a hotel, which supported the claims of the affair.
