In Mulegé, Baja California Sur, search operations led to the discovery of two sets of human remains in a clandestine burial site. Forensic experts from the State Attorney General's Office (PGJE) processed the site to determine the identities and causes of death for the deceased, amid reports that 1,208 people remain missing in the state. Subsequent investigations confirmed that skeletal remains found in a clandestine grave in July belong to Carlos Alberto Beltrán Olmeda, the former Chief Administrative Officer of the Los Cabos municipal government. Beltrán Olmeda had resigned from his post in May 2026. On August 23, the Attorney General's Office confirmed through forensic genetic testing that the remains, originally discovered on July 13 in a dirt path near the La Ballena neighborhood in San José del Cabo, belong to Beltrán Olmeda. In addition to his role in Los Cabos, he served as a political advisor to Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya. The Specialized Prosecutor's Office for the Investigation of Forced Disappearance is investigating the circumstances of his death. Authorities are currently pursuing several leads, including a reported trip Beltrán made to Guaymas, Sonora, where he met with businessmen from the fuel industry prior to his disappearance.
