Search collectives in Mexico continue to uncover clandestine graves containing human remains across different states. In Sonora, the Buscadoras de la Frontera Nogales collective discovered a grave in Sonoyta following an anonymous tip. The site contained human bone remains, more than 50 spent shell casings, a black sneaker, and a comb. This follows a previous discovery in the Felipe Ángeles ejido where eight sets of remains were found. In Coahuila, the collective Grupo Vida Laguna identified three separate graves in a desert area of Viesca. Forensic specialists, including anthropologists and archaeologists, are conducting recovery operations on bone fragments that show “high levels of fragmentation and calcination.” ~~Investigations are ongoing~~ Data from INEGI highlights a broader forensic and humanitarian crisis in the country. In 2025, forensic services received 97,920 corpses, representing a 2.1 percent decrease from the previous year. However, a massive backlog of unidentified remains persists, with 10,770 bodies stored in morgues and amphitheaters at the end of the year. Approximately 26.3 percent of unidentified bodies were buried in individual mass graves in public cemeteries. President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that the localization of persons increased by 16.6 percent, with 284 successful localizations. To address the crisis, the government has allocated over 643.5 million pesos to ~~identify~~ strengthen local search commissions and expand the ~~victims.~~ hiring of forensic experts, such as anthropologists and odontologists, including the construction of human identification centers.
