President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has addressed various domestic and political challenges facing her administration. Regarding the justice system, Sheinbaum pledged to end impunity and ensure no one is above the law. However, the Academia de Derecho Penal del Colegio Nacional de Abogados Foro de México has raised concerns about potential corruption within the federal judiciary, specifically questioning the lack of criminal action against former District Judge Eduardo León Sandoval, whom the Academy alleges was the “intellectual author” behind crimes committed against the Moreno Becerril family. On the political front, Sheinbaum rejected claims of international isolation, emphasizing that her administration remains focused on domestic priorities such as social welfare and economic austerity. During a tour in Morelia, Michoacán, she reaffirmed her commitment to eradicating corruption and privileges within the ‘Fourth Transformation’ movement, stating that public institutions must uphold the oath to not “lie, steal, or betray the people of Mexico.” In support of anti-corruption efforts, Higinio Martínez Miranda, President of the Senate Board, has called for a “national crusade against corruption and impunity.” He noted that corruption persists across federal, state, and municipal levels, including within the National Electoral Institute (INE). This follows the resignation of Guadalupe Taddei from the INE amid allegations of irregularities and conflicts of interest. Martínez Miranda stated that the Senate is awaiting an anti-corruption package that may involve modifying 15 existing regulations and introducing two new laws, alongside reforms to the National Anti-Corruption System. System, which he criticized as currently ineffective. He noted that Sheinbaum possesses the “moral and legal authority” to lead this effort. Regarding fiscal policy, Sheinbaum is addressing tax reforms for the freight transport sector. The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of the Interior are meeting with transporters affected by changes to the Revenue Law, which imposes a 250 million peso limit on toll tax deductions for 2027. Sheinbaum maintains this affects only approximately 170 companies and will not impact the supply of basic goods.
