For instance, waterfowl may initially increase in Northern Greek wetlands during cold spells as they seek milder climates, but may continue to more southern regions if extreme weather persists and food becomes scarce. Additionally, woodcocks in forest ecosystems have been observed abandoning mountainous areas for lower altitudes during intense cold periods to find more favorable conditions.
