An international study involving the Estación Experimental del Zaidín and the Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología analyzed over 50,000 conifer wood samples across four continents. The findings suggest that while rising temperatures may extend growing seasons, they do not necessarily increase wood production or CO2 absorption. The rate of xylogenesis—the formation of new wood cells—is heavily dependent on water availability, meaning the benefits of warmth may be offset by drought.

Subsequent reports highlight both challenges and unexpected resilience within these ecosystems. While some research confirms that higher temperatures and reduced water availability can slow cell production, other studies indicate that certain pine species growing outside their natural distribution in the Southern Hemisphere can achieve growth rates up to four times higher than those in their native regions while maintaining high drought tolerance.
