Climate warming in the Italian Alps continues to drive significant ecological and geological shifts. Research from Stelvio National Park indicates high-altitude temperatures are rising up to three degrees above historic averages, disrupting wildlife and pushing flora to higher elevations. Glacial retreat remains a critical concern. The Adamello Glacier has seen its Mandrone tongue retreat approximately 550 meters between 2016 and 2026. The Forni Glacier, Italy’s second-largest, has retreated 3 km since the start of the century. Data from the University of Milan shows the Forni front retreated over 400 meters between 2014 and 2022, with thickness losses reaching 70 meters in some areas. On extreme heat days, the glacier can lose up to 10 cm of thickness in a single day. Experts have also noted the darkening of ice, increased debris coverage, and the disintegration of the glacier's front. Recent heavy rainfall in the Orobie Valtellinesi and Valfurva regions caused partial flooding of the Frodolfo stream and damaged hiking trails near Rifugio Forni. In the Dolomites, the Marmolada glacier experienced a record retreat during the 2026 summer season, shrinking by an average of 23 meters. Data from the eighth Participatory Glaciological Campaign, organized by the University of Padua, shows the glacier’s total surface area decreased from 92 to 83 hectares. The western front has retreated 120 meters over the last two years. Experts, including Mauro Varotto from the University of Padua, warned that if record-breaking summer temperatures persist, the glacier could potentially vanish within a decade. In the Julian Alps, the Montasio Glacier is showing signs of distress. Monitoring reveals a notable reduction in snowfall, with May snow depths reaching only 20 meters compared to historical peaks of 30–40 meters.
