Club América celebrated its 110th anniversary on October 12, 2026, marking over a century of history and its status as one of Mexico’s most successful football institutions with 16 Liga MX titles. The milestone was highlighted by a 1-1 draw against Monterrey. The match was marked by several points of contention, including refereeing complaints from Monterrey and verbal outbursts from América player Brian Rodríguez toward the fourth official. This fixture also saw América become the first Mexican team to reach 6,000 goals in official competitions. Beyond the pitch, the anniversary festivities involved controversy regarding Raúl ‘Potro’ Gutiérrez, the head coach of Cruz Azul Femenil. A former América player, Gutiérrez faced backlash from Cruz Azul fans and media after attending the ceremony at Estadio Azteca to receive career recognition while wearing an América jersey. Gutiérrez issued a public apology, describing his actions as an “autogol” (own goal) and stating he failed to realize the impact his participation would have on the Cruz Azul community. Adding to the commemorative atmosphere, former manager André Jardine shared an emotional tribute on social media. Jardine, who led the club to a historic ‘tricampeonato’ by winning the Apertura 2023, Clausura 2024, and Apertura 2025 titles, expressed that it remains an honor to have coached the institution. He is currently managing Shabab Al Ahli in the United Arab Emirates. Former player Álvaro Fidalgo, now with Real Betis, and former defender Aquivaldo Mosquera also shared tributes and historical anecdotes regarding the club’s past victories and leadership. The club’s commemorative Adidas-designed collection, featuring 1970s-inspired aesthetics and traditional cream and blue colors, remains available to fans.
