Club Brugge is encountering obstacles regarding the construction of its new football stadium, which is intended to accommodate over 40,000 spectators. Initially, the project faced legal challenges as six local residents took the matter to the Council of State in cassation. A resident, Toon Van Moerbeke, indicated that while he does not oppose a new stadium, he believes the club has refused to reach a compromise on the project’s scale, location, and mobility plans. Legal disputes regarding parking regulations could potentially delay construction by up to eighteen months. Further complications have emerged regarding land use at the Olympiasite. The club requires a new lease agreement with the City of Bruges, as existing arrangements with Club Brugge and Cercle Brugge are insufficient for the proposed project. Negotiations concerning compensation, duration, and specific conditions are ongoing. According to Bruges Alderman for Property Pieter Marechal, the file cannot be presented to the city council for approval until October. Recent developments indicate that a legal appeal against the environmental permit has been rejected. However, the club must still secure a new long-term lease agreement with the City of Bruges for the Olympiasite. Negotiations regarding compensation, duration, and specific usage conditions remain ongoing, with city council approval not expected before October. As of late August 2026, the club continues to manage these negotiations with the city of Bruges regarding land use for the proposed stadium project.
