Club Sport Cartaginés has maintained a winning form across different competitions in August and September 2026. In the Costa Rican Apertura season, the club secured a 2-1 victory against Sporting FC, followed by a 1-0 win over Club Sport Herediano in the sixth round. Joaquín Alonso Hernández scored the decisive goal in the 43rd minute against Herediano, moving Cartaginés to second place with 12 points. This victory highlighted a stark contrast in form, as Herediano, the defending national champion, struggled at the bottom of the table with only four points, marking their worst start since 2022. Cartaginés continued its domestic ascent by defeating Liga Deportiva Alajuelense 3-1. Goals from Claudio Montero, Douglas López, and an own goal by Farbod Samadian propelled the club to the top spot in the Apertura 2026 tournament standings. This victory moved the club to 18 points, placing them at the top of the standings due to a superior goal difference, overtaking Deportivo Saprissa. In the wake of the defeat by Cartaginés, Alajuelense dismissed Spanish head coach Ismael Rescalvo and relieved assistant coach and physical preparation specialist Robert Tejero of their duties. The decision follows a period of poor form where the team failed to win any of its last four matches. Following the win over Herediano, manager Amarini Villatoro addressed rumors regarding a potential return to coaching in Guatemala, stating he is “fully committed to his current project in Costa Rica” and that no official proposals exist. Meanwhile, player Diego González expressed his ambition to pursue Costa Rican citizenship to eventually play for the national team. In regional competition, Cartaginés recorded a 4-0 win against Verdes of Belize in the Copa Centroamericana. The club remains focused on navigating Group D against Motagua and Municipal to secure favorable positioning for the quarter-finals.
