Authorities in Bali have intercepted multiple significant international cocaine smuggling attempts at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. On October 11, police and customs officials arrested a 36-year-old Brazilian woman after discovering approximately 3.6 kilograms of liquid cocaine. The narcotics were concealed in seven bottles disguised as shampoo and personal care products. The suspect reportedly claimed she was working for an individual identified as ‘G’ in exchange for 50,000 USD and covered travel expenses. Under Indonesia’s strict drug laws, she faces potential life imprisonment or the death penalty and remains in custody at the Bali Regional Police headquarters. On October 15, a separate operation involving the Bali National Narcotics Board (BNNP) and customs officials led to the seizure of approximately 4.59 kilograms of cocaine. This incident involved two Chilean nationals nationals—a 31-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman—and a local recipient. recipient, identified as H. U. The drugs, found in four black plastic packages, were hidden within false compartments in the walls of backpacks during an X-ray inspection of passengers arriving from Melbourne on a Jetstar flight. The shipment is valued at approximately 1.5 billion Chilean pesos. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the group is part of an international trafficking network. The suspects face potential sentences ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment or the death penalty. Following the arrest of the Brazilian woman, local narcotics investigators are working to map the supply network and identify other individuals involved in the scheme. While the Bali case remains under investigation, related enforcement actions in Brazil have seen authorities in Rio Grande do Sul issue sentences of up to 54 years for members of a criminal organization investigated under ‘Operation Hinterland’. That group was accused of moving over R$ 3 billion through international cocaine trafficking between 2019 and 2022, frequently using commercial cargo destined for Europe to hide narcotics.
