The Conference of Directors of Italian Universities (Codau) has initiated discussions regarding administrative and structural reforms within the Italian higher education system. Vincenzo Tedesco, president of Codau and Director General of the Polytechnic University of Turin, has called for concrete proposals to simplify complex university management. Speaking at a meeting hosted by the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, Tedesco emphasized that the association aims to move beyond mere requests for increased financial resources to provide technical and managerial expertise for operational improvements. He noted that Codau is engaging with the Conference of Italian University Rectors (Crui) ahead of the upcoming budget law to address funding needs, spending constraints, and the sustainability of investments following the PNRR. Tedesco specifically criticized the structural rigidity of the Ordinary Financing Fund (Ffo), stating that late definitions of base quotas and tied portions hinder effective planning. A national conference titled ‘Beyond the PNRR: Continuity and Competitiveness for the Italian University’ is scheduled for November 15 to 17 at the University of Calabria to address these systemic challenges. Furthering these efforts, Codau Vice President Pietro Di Benedetto, Director General of the University of L'Aquila, has advocated for the recognition of all universities, regardless of size or location. He emphasized that smaller institutions serve as vital regional hubs by providing education that allows students to remain in their communities rather than relocating to major northern centers. Di Benedetto urged greater collaboration between public and private academic entities to establish common administrative directions and address student needs within a complex regulatory framework. During a recent Codau Board meeting, Antonella Rago, representing non-state universities, noted that the private sector now accounts for approximately 30% of the Italian university landscape, contributing significantly to national research and professional training.
