CODECO militia violence in Ituri

Overview

Violence attributed to the CODECO militia in the Djugu territory of Ituri, Democratic Republic of the Congo, has caused multiple civilian deaths and mass displacement.

On October 9, 2026, an attack on the village of Maze killed at least eleven civilians, primarily women and elderly individuals. This incident ended several months of relative calm in the region. The Hema community association ENTE condemned the massacre, stating it “undermines peace efforts,” and called for the government to intensify operations against illegal armed groups.

By October 12, further attacks occurred, including an incursion at the Rhoo displacement site that killed at least four people. In response to threats of imminent violence, approximately 6,000 displaced persons fled from Rhoo and Djangi toward MONUSCO bases in Rhoo and Drodro. During this movement, at least two children reportedly died. Additional incursions in the Blukwa area resulted in further casualties, looting, and the burning of homes. MONUSCO forces have responded by reinforcing protection measures and increasing patrols to secure the population.
