Codelco El Teniente operational improvements
Overview
Codelco’s El Teniente division has implemented several initiatives focused on operational efficiency and technological advancement.
In early August, the division launched a Digital Operational Intelligence Unit. This unit consolidates data from over 6,000 sensors and 60 databases to create predictive models and AI tools. According to division leaders Branco Espinosa and Juan Orellana, the system is designed to improve safety, productivity, and operational continuity by providing actionable insights and reducing manual tasks.
Later in the month, the division completed a refurbishment project for four decommissioned railway ore transport cars that had been out of service for approximately five years. The project involved technical upgrades to pneumatic, hydraulic, and braking systems, as well as applying an anti-adhesive polymer film to prevent mineral buildup. The refurbishment cost the equivalent of a single new unit, representing a significant cost saving for the operation.
