Coffee industry developments in Japan
Overview
The specialty and quick-service coffee sectors in Japan are seeing new developments through brand expansions and international entries.
Tully’s Coffee Express is adjusting its footprint in Tokyo. The compact format is opening a new outlet at Mejiro Station on 30 July 2026. This follows the closure of its Kamiooka Station location on 31 May 2026, which has been converted into a site for Tully’s-branded beverage and frozen-dessert vending machines to serve commuters.
Additionally, the Swedish specialty brand Drop Coffee Roasters is scheduled to open its first Japanese location at Nakano Marui in Tokyo on 18 September 2026. The Stockholm-founded organic roaster aims to bring its Nordic ‘Fika’ lifestyle and direct-trade coffee practices to the Japanese market.
