Late May 2026 Coinbase rolled out Base’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), letting LLM agents such as Claude and Cursor trigger on‑chain actions. Avantis adopted the MCP for AI‑driven perpetual‑futures, and the CFTC approved regulated Bitcoin perpetual futures, shifting focus to AI‑assisted derivatives. In June Coinbase launched “Coinbase for Agents,” a suite that links large‑language‑model agents to user accounts for spot and derivatives trading, portfolio rebalancing and automated payments, adding tokenized stocks, USDC‑backed credit cards and AI investment advisors. July saw a strategic pivot after the failure of Base’s creator‑coin experiments: the layer‑2 was refocused on trading infrastructure, stable‑coin payments and AI agents, while a sharp drop in user confidence led influencers to label Base‑related data unreliable after 24 hours. The x402 protocol, reviving HTTP 402 for instant low‑cost stable‑coin micropayments, received institutional backing via the Linux‑Foundation‑run x402 Foundation and was integrated into Coinbase’s Business platform, enabling autonomous agents to receive USDC. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, on 27 July, coined “Agentic Finance” (AiFi) and argued that autonomous AI agents will soon process more daily transactions than humans, citing Chainalysis data that x402‑enabled payments on Base exceeded 100 million transactions in nine months, with a 30‑day volume of $24.24 million. By late July, the x402 protocol gained support from over 20 major organizations, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and AWS, to facilitate sub‑cent transactions for AI API calls and data access. Over the past year, agentic payments reached $73 million across 176 million transactions. On 4 August Cloudflare introduced Cloudflare Wallets and the cloudflare.pay service, offering Account and Virtual wallets that can be programmed with spending caps, merchant lists and per‑transaction limits. The wallets run on x402; full on‑ramp/off‑ramp capabilities are expected soon. A follow‑up announcement on 7 August reiterated the wallet features and warned that rising AI model usage fees could outpace programmer salaries by 2028, highlighting budgeting pressures as AI becomes core to business operations.
