Coinbase has focused on expanding the utility and financial reach of its Base network. Initially, the company emphasized global cryptocurrency adoption through stablecoins, with the Base network becoming a major infrastructure layer for stablecoin-linked card payments. By July 2026, Base accounted for approximately 19% of tracked crypto card spending volume, supported by Visa’s expansion of its stablecoin settlement pilot to the network. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has advocated for broader adoption, suggesting that decentralized finance (DeFi) and tokenized stocks could provide financial services to billions of unbanked or unbrokered individuals worldwide. Following these infrastructure developments, Coinbase expanded its Base App’s trading capabilities by integrating Hyperliquid’s perpetual futures engine. This integration allows eligible self-custody users to trade over 290 perpetual contract markets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and various tokenized stocks and commodities, with up to 50x leverage. While the Base App serves as the user interface, Hyperliquid manages trade execution and liquidity. This feature is subject to geographic restrictions and is not available to users located in the United States, United Kingdom, or Canada. Coinbase Head of Engineering Chintan Turakhia noted that perpetuals are a “highly requested feature,” as they represent a significant portion of total crypto trading volume. This move builds on a partnership established in May 2026, in which Coinbase was designated as the official USDC treasury deployer on the Hyperliquid network.
