The extreme weather patterns in Hungary and Romania continue to present significant environmental and agricultural challenges. In Romania’s Bihor County, high temperatures and low precipitation have fueled numerous wildfires affecting forests, pastures, and settlements. In Hungary, the drought persists, particularly in the central regions and the Great Plain, where significant water shortages have caused corn and sunflower crops to undergo desiccation. Recent data indicates that August 2026 was among the driest on record for several European nations. In Hungary, approximately two-thirds of the country faced the highest drought warnings. This period of drought in Central Europe is part of a broader trend, with 58 percent of the European Union’s territory affected by drought in August. Weather in Hungary is now transitioning toward more variable autumnal conditions. Following a warm weekend with temperatures reaching up to 30°C, a significant cold front is expected to arrive late Sunday night. According to HungaroMet Zrt., while Sunday may offer summer-like conditions, the weather will shift dramatically starting Monday. Forecasts indicate cloudier skies and potential showers, particularly in the northeastern parts of the country, accompanied by strong to stormy northwest winds. From Tuesday onwards, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with daytime highs ranging between 16 and 22 degrees Celsius and morning lows potentially falling near freezing. In Romania, meteorologists have issued a yellow warning for stormy winds in regions including Oltenia, central and southern Moldova, and the western Southern Carpathians. Wind gusts may reach 50–70 km/h, with speeds up to 90 km/h in higher altitudes. This system is also expected to bring a drastic temperature drop of 8–12 degrees Celsius, with potential snow or sleet in mountainous areas through Thursday.
