Cold water immersion safety and drowning risks
Overview
Health authorities are warning about the “cold water response,” an involuntary physiological reaction to sudden immersion in cold water that can lead to drowning. This phenomenon, often called “cold water shock,” can trigger an involuntary gasp, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and elevated blood pressure, which may cause a loss of coordination and breath control.
Data from the National Observatory for Drowning Prevention recorded 604 deaths during the 2024-2025 biennium, with 277 of those occurring in inland environments such as lakes and rivers. Experts note that calm surfaces in these areas can hide submerged obstacles, strong currents, or sudden changes in depth. To mitigate risks, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità suggests entering water slowly. In the event of an incident, authorities advise individuals to avoid panicking and attempt to float with their heads above water until breathing is controlled.
