Political maneuvering in Colima regarding the 2027 gubernatorial succession has shifted from coalition building to a formal fracture within existing alliances. Initially, opposition figures, including Senator Virgilio Mendoza Amezcua, began negotiating a unified front to challenge the Morena party. Mendoza was identified as a key figure alongside Senator Mely Romero and PAN mayor Riult Rivera in efforts to form a broad state alliance. However, the political landscape changed when Mendoza resigned as the state leader of the Green Ecological Party of Mexico (PVEM) in Colima. This resignation followed the designation of Rosa María Bayardo Cabrero as a coordinator for Morena, a move Mendoza criticized. Mendoza expressed dissatisfaction with Bayardo Cabrero, citing her previous performance as mayor of Manzanillo, and specifically disagreed with her role in the defense of the ‘Fourth Transformation.’ Following his departure, Mendoza indicated that approximately 40 local PVEM leaders intend to resign to support a new political movement. This movement aimed at competing aims to involve social leaders and citizens to compete against Morena in the 2027 elections.
