On 1 July, a €12 entry fee for tourists was introduced at the Cologne Cathedral to help cover daily operating and maintenance costs, which are estimated at approximately €44,000 per day. The Dom Chapter reported that the fee covers roughly half of these daily expenses and noted that the implementation has proceeded smoothly without significant disruption. Following the introduction of the fee, Cardinal Rainer-Maria Woelki clarified that while a charge is required for full tourist sightseeing of the interior, short visits for prayer and reflection remain free. He emphasized that the cathedral remains a house of God, noting that individuals seeking quiet or prayer can still access a designated portion of the interior through a side entrance without payment. Despite these clarifications, some critics have expressed concern regarding the loss of easy, free access to the entire cathedral interior.
