Cologne deportation controversy in North Rhine-Westphalia
Overview
A controversy has emerged in North Rhine-Westphalia regarding the management of deportations in Cologne, centered on the ‘Coesfeld List’. This list, provided by the Coesfeld Central Aliens Authority, contains names of individuals from Western Balkan states, many of whom are subject to criminal investigations for offenses including murder, robbery, and sexual assault.
Initial reports indicate that Cologne authorities declined assistance from the state government to procure replacement travel documents for approximately 29 percent of the identified individuals. Verena Schäffer, the state migration minister, criticized this stance, noting that ‘tolerated stays cannot simply be extended’ once the legal grounds for such status expire.
Subsequent findings revealed that while the Coesfeld authority offered deportation assistance to 73 municipalities, the uptake was minimal. Only four municipalities accepted the help, while others either did not respond to communications or stated they would manage procedures independently. Cologne specifically declined support for a list of 471 names, despite the presence of numerous individuals with criminal records.
