Colombia biodiversity and forest conservation efforts
Overview
Colombia is advancing biodiversity and forest conservation through international cooperation and domestic initiatives. The country has focused on meeting global targets via the COP16 summit and the national ‘Agenda ABC’ (Water, Biodiversity, and Communities), which targets deforestation, pollution, and illegal wildlife trafficking.
Local efforts have expanded to include community-led restoration and the designation of new protected areas. In Antioquia, the ‘Sembremos Confianza’ project, supported by the UNDP, aims to protect jaguar habitats and mitigate deforestation across hundreds of thousands of hectares. Meanwhile, in Valle del Cauca, the Regional Autonomous Corporation (CVC) has added over 2,500 hectares to its protected network, focusing on tropical dry forests, wetlands, and forest heritage to safeguard water sources and promote ecotourism.
