Following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on August 10, 2026, relief and regulatory efforts have emerged in Colombia. In Bogotá, the Banco de Ropa del Minuto de Dios established donation centers in Engativá and Ciudad Bolívar to collect clothing and accessories for victims in Risaralda, Valle del Cauca, Chocó, Caldas, and Quindío. The organization requested clean items such as shoes and bags, while noting they would not accept used underwear, expired food, or medications. Authorities have also focused on legal and safety guidance. The Bogotá District Habitat Secretariat (SDHT) provided information regarding insurance claims, lease contracts, and property repairs under Law 675 of 2001. The SDHT clarified that while the Civil Code allows for contract termination if a property is totally destroyed or rent reduction for structural damage, the Secretariat lacks the judicial authority to nullify contracts and recommends mediation or civil courts for disputes. Additionally, the SDHT noted that earthquake events do not exempt residents from paying common administration fees required for repairs. Simultaneously, the District Institute for Risk Management and Climate Change (IDIGER) released a preparedness guide advising residents to evaluate building structures for seismic resistance, create family emergency plans with designated meeting points, and maintain emergency kits. IDIGER also recommends conducting drills at least twice a year. Private sector relief has also expanded through the ‘Colombia necesita a Colombia’ initiative by Kapital House. The company established a collection center in Bogotá for potable water, non-perishable food, hygiene products, blankets, and pet food. They have also implemented a payroll deduction system for voluntary monetary contributions from employees in Colombia and Mexico. As of late August, the Bogotá District Health Secretariat (SDS) is coordinating the medical transfer and care of patients from heavily impacted regions, including Cali, Buenaventura, Pereira, Manizales, and Quibdó.
