A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia, with its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department. The disaster, described as the most destructive to hit the country this century, caused significant damage across nine regions, including Cali, Pereira, and Manizales. Preliminary reports indicated between 111 and 250 deaths, alongside damage to numerous schools, health centers, and homes. International and private relief efforts followed the disaster. The European Union released 2 million euros in aid to support heavily impacted communities and mobilized its Copernicus satellite service to provide critical data for rescue operations. Additionally, the Spanish travel platform Civitatis launched a ‘Free tour benéfico por Colombia’ initiative, donating funds to the Colombian organization Presentes Corporación to help restore living conditions for affected families. Further humanitarian support has been provided by the Vatican, with Pope Leo XIV donating 100,000 euros to Cáritas Colombia to assist with emergency relief and coordination through local dioceses. To facilitate communication between families, several Spanish telecommunications companies, including Telefónica (via Movistar and O2), MasOrange, and Vodafone, have implemented relief measures such as free calls and SMS to Colombia.
